Topic- Infrastructure Development
On 10th Sept. 2011, a guest lecture about Infrastructure in India compared with China was held. We were told about some of the developmental projects in China such as Donghai Bridge, Hangzhou Bay Bridge, Sutong Bay Bridge, Lupu Bay Bridge, Nanpu Bridge, the 3 Gorges Dam, the Magnetic Train, etc. In India, the biggest infrastructure developmental projects are the Golden Quadrilateral by NHAI (National Highway Authority of India), the Shivdi-Nava Bridge in Mumbai, Alignment of Bandra-Worli Sea link project, etc. The students were even enlightened by the fact that the funds after the project completion come from tolls, ads, leasing, & TDCs (Transport Development Cess).
Majorly, the lecture revolved around infrastructure in Mumbai and that’s one of the reasons that we have come to know about the fact that a master plan for Magarpatta City (Pride of Pune) was developed by the local farmers. We even came to know about the contribution of CIDCO in railways as 66% in financing. This kind of contribution is very important for the infrastructure development as then only the connectivity will improve and so the development will follow.
The best part of the lecture was that we, as future managers, came to know about the root cause of slow development of infrastructure in India; it is “we spend more time in construction than in planning, but it should be vice-versa”. It was truly an enhancing experience to know about infrastructure, its development and the contribution that management can make…
